Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

Every mother to be is greatly concerned with the health and well being of her unborn child. Pregnancy health issues are different for each woman; some suffer from diabetes or high blood pressure, which are easily treatable. However, a mother to be who is addicted to smoking faces a more challenging journey through her pregnancy. The health of her child is entirely up to her, there is nothing a doctor can do to protect the health of that child. Even tobacco companies warn mothers to be against smoking, which says a lot coming from companies that unapologetically sell a product that harms the health of a variety of individuals – yet, they understand the damage that can be done, in particular to an infant. Read on to learn the risks of smoking during pregnancy and the effects it can have on an unborn child.

Unlike marijuana and other drugs that can linger in your bloodstream and urine for over a month, nicotine can be out of your bloodstream in a relatively short amount of time. In the brain, it takes about forty minutes from your last smoke and many of the effects can be gone within a few days. However, there is still nicotine present in other parts of your body. The drug can be in your fatty tissues, as well as your kidneys, and these effects will continue to be present as long as two to three weeks. A lot of this of course depends on you, how long you smoked, how much you weigh, and what kind of lifestyle you have, as well as how old you are.

The Effects of Smoking while Pregnant

The effects of smoking during pregnancy are abundant and devastating. Here are some of the ways in which smoking can harm your unborn child and ruin their chance of a healthy start:

- Low birth weight

- Damage to lungs that cause them to not function properly

- Smaller than average organs

- Higher risk of death from SIDS (Sudden – Infant Death Syndrome)

- Sickly child (may become ill frequently)

- Psychological and physical disabilities, including learning disorders

- Higher risk of becoming smokers themselves

Quitting Smoking

Some smokers who are also mothers to be are under the misconception that smoking fewer cigarettes will lower the risk of their baby developing health issues as a result of their smoking. However, cutting back on smoking is still smoking and the unborn child is still living in a tainted environment. Therefore they can still fall victim to the damaging effects of smoking. The only way to ensure the health of an unborn child is to quit smoking altogether during pregnancy.

Many mothers to be find that concern for the well being of their baby is enough motivation to quit smoking, and some can do so cold turkey. Still, there are those who struggle and require lots of support from their doctor or midwife and family and friends. Ask your doctor what the safest options are for you if you think you cannot quit smoking on your own. Develop a smoking cessation plan and get on your way to a healthy, smoke free pregnancy

Electronic Cigarettes versus Big Tobacco – You Don’t Want to Miss This!

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

As e-cigarettes storm the U.S. Market and sales continue to climb Big Tobacco throws it’s weight behind legislation that could not only send the e-cigarette packing, but also put small tobacco cigarette producing companies out of business for good.

Electronic Cigarettes, or e-cigarettes have stormed the U.S. market in the last few months and have generated a tremendous amount of excitement and confusion. Smokers and loved ones of smokers are equally charged about the idea of a potentially healthier, safer and even cheaper alternative to traditional tobacco cigarettes while many are also puzzled as to their legal status with regards to U.S. customs and the FDA.

Electronic cigarettes have actually been around for about 5 years, having been invented by the Runyan corp. in China in 2004. The were designed to replace tobacco cigarettes and cigars because, despite the spreading global smoking bans, many smokers were just not able to quit smoking altogether. There are other nicotine replacement products on the market, such as gum and patches, but they don’t replicate the smoking experience which has been found to be a part of the addictive ritual of smoking. The electronic cigarette is a revolutionary device that aims to both deliver nicotine to the user and to simulate the act of smoking a tobacco cigarette.

The basic idea is simple. Electronic cigarettes look like a cigarettes, deliver nicotine to the user like a cigarette, and even function, ie- “puff”, like a cigarette. The real genius is in the detals though. Electronic cigarettes do NOT have any of the tobacco or other chemical additives of regular cigarettes, there is no flame or smoke, and thus no secondhand smoke. The just contain battery charged cartridges and put out a water propylene glycol based vapor that is both harmless and odorless. Because these are “smokeless” cigarettes, users are not subject to the widespread smoking bans and are able to smoke e-cigarettes in places like restaurants, bars, airports, workplaces, etc. Add to this the huge cost savings over tobacco cigarettes and it’s clear we have a reall winner here.

Now what about those legal status issues? E-cigarettes fall into a legal grey zone because they haven’t been officially approved or banned by the FDA but they are sill being commonly sold in the U.S. There is widespread debate as to whether or not the FDA has jurisdiction over e-cigarettes and there is a bill currently in Congress that promises to further complicate the issue. The Family Smoking Prevention And Tobacco Control Act, passed by the House on 04/02/09, and now in the Senate would permit the FDA “to review and consider the evidence for additional indications for nicotine replacement products.” It wouldn’t take much to arrive at an interpretation of this that puts e-cigarettes under the FDA’s control.

It will certainly be interesting to watch how this unfolds, in particular with regards to the special interests that have a stake in the e-cigarettes’ success or failure. Another unique aspect of electronic cigarettes is that, unlike big tobacco, which is dominated by a few large companies, some smaller firms have been able to successfully produce and sell these devices. It shouldn’t come as a shock to learn that Phillip Morris strongly supports the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act, which would in effect make producting tobacco products more expensive, thus ridding them of small-time competitors, and potentially getting rid of the whole pesky e-cigarette issue.

One thing is for certain, those who have already discovered electronic cigarettes are watching closely because this is truly a product that has already changed the lives of many smokers who now have no desire to go near a tobacco cigarette or to hand over their hard earned cash to big tobacco. If history is any indication, generally the best products with the most loyal customers are going to win out in the end anyway. Electronic Cigarettes are winning over thousands of smokers on a daily basis because news of a good thing travels fast.

There is Nothing Safe From The Dangers Of Smoking

Sunday, May 17th, 2009

Many people today are vaguely aware of the many dangerous effects of cigarette smoking, from lung cancer to bronchitis.  However, the real truth is that there are many, many parts of one’s body, many members of one’s family, and many aspects of one’s life that are hit hard by the effects of cigarette smoking.

Sure, we all know about lung cancer and bronchitis.  But did you know that cigarette smoking is the number one contributor to heart attacks as well?  Did you also know that many types of cancers are also thought to be caused by the harmful effects of cigarette smoking, including liver cancer, bladder cancer, cancer of the larynx, cancer of the throat, cancer of the mouth and tongue, esophageal cancer, cancer of the large intestine, and even cancer of the bloodstream?

It was also found that the tobacco industry marketed their product to youth groups; that even though the industry claims it does not want children to smoke, the companies were caught tracking youth behavior and preferences, thereby ensuring that “marketing and promotion reaches youth,” even hiding from them the serious dangers of smoking while their young bodies were still developing.

Lung cancer is not the only smoking effect that hits the respiratory system.  Most smokers are more prone to bronchitis, a constant shortness of breath and persistent cough with sputum, and are more likely to get colds, flu, pneumonia, and asthma.  Smoking also complicates tuberculosis and virtually any other respiratory condition one can get.

The effects of cigarette smoking also reach out to those around you as well.  Those who are exposed to second-hand smoke inhale about 15% the amount of nicotine as those who are active smokers, so for every ten cigarettes you have around your children, they may as well have smoked one a half cigarettes themselves.

Under the ruling, the tobacco companies were also ordered to stop using such descriptions as “low tar,” “light,” “ultra light,” “mild,” or “natural,” or any other descriptions that might seem as if these cigarettes posed less of a health hazard or in any way were an attempt to downplay the dangers of smoking them.

While this ruling was a victory for many anti-smoking and anti-tobacco campaigns, many commented on how long it took for the government to respond to tobacco’s use and on how long the actual case itself took as well.  Others felt that perhaps the court was not punitive enough with the industry.  “We are pleased with the court’s finding of liability on the part of the defendants, but disappointed that the court did not impose all of the remedies sought by the government,” the Justice Department said in a written statement.  “Nevertheless, we are hopeful that the remedies that were imposed by the court can have a significant, positive impact on the health of the American public.”  All in all, it seemed to many to be a hollow victory, but still did some good in highlighting the real dangers of smoking that even the tobacco industry itself could not – or was no longer allowed to – deny.
